Earlier this spring it was time, once again, to go to my doctor’s office for my annual exam. This was not something I particularly looked forward to – especially this year – since I had been feeling worn out and fatigued and I knew that I had gained 10 pounds since my last visit.
After discussing my symptoms with my doctor and taking all the routine tests my doctor scheduled another follow-up visit to discuss the results. Dreading the worse I returned to her office somewhat fearful of what I would learn. Fortunately, my doctor ruled out any serious condition but she did tell me that she felt my symptoms could be related to a metabolic condition and how my body was processing food and converting it into energy. She told me that a number of conditions such as fatigue, obesity, cancer and diabetes could be directly linked to the process of how our body cells process food and use oxygen and how our bodies can produce free radicals which then can begin a chain reaction that slowly damages our body cells. To counter this process, antioxidants such as Vitamin E, beta-carotene and Vitamin C are molecules which can safely interact with these free radicals and stop this reaction.
Unfortunately, all of this sounded pretty complicated to me and she had me lost when she got to the “free radical” part of the discussion since I associated free radicals with “Power to the People!” Anyway, knowing my resistance to taking prescription drugs, she surprised me by suggesting that I consider an alternative treatment. She told about several recent studies which suggested that foods and supplements high in antioxidants (such as Acai berry, blueberries, green tea and chocolates) could help to slow down this free radical process.
Specifically, she told me about one of the studies which showed that the Acai berry, which is grown in Brazil, may be one of the highest natural sources of antioxidants known to exist. She suggested that I do a little research on my own and consider adding a natural antioxidant supplement to my diet before taking a more aggressive pharmaceutical approach.
So, after doing a little digging and discussing antioxidants with the vitamin expert at my local food co-op I discovered that the Acai berry has over 30% more antioxidant properties than any other fruit, including blueberries, grapes or cherries. Also it has high amounts of essential fatty acids and omegas which are proven to lower LDL and maintain HDL cholesterol levels.
So now, six weeks later, after adding an Acai berry supplement to my daily diet plan, I can already see my level of energy increase and I’m not so tired; and, as a side benefit . . . I’ve lost 6 pounds. I don’t know if I would call this a “wonder drug,” but I do know that I feel a whole lot better!
